Return to Learn R2L in PWCS

We are excited to welcome all of you back for another school year in PWCS. This school year will look different in many ways, and we have compiled this online Return to Learn Guide with information and resources you and your students need to start the year off right.

As a reminder, the 2020-21 school year will begin with a 100 percent distance learning model for the first quarter.  Eligible Special Education students and other especially vulnerable student groups, as feasible, will receive some in-person services, and those families will be notified of their Return to Learn  procedures directly.

Key information and specific details related to virtual learning and school-day operations will be coming directly from your students' schools. Remember to check your school websites daily and read all emails from PWCS and your students' schools.

The Basics

  • School begins Tuesday, September 8, 2020.

  • Course/Class Schedules for Students
    Schedules will be delivered in StudentVUE and ParentVUE
    • Elementary by September 2
    • Middle, High, Traditional and Non Traditional no later than 5:00 p.m. on September 4
  • Supply lists should be posted on the majority of elementary and middle school websites. High schools don't generally post lists. Start with the basics. Your student's teachers will communicate what is needed for their classes.
  • School start times will be available on each school website. All high schools will begin at 8:30 a.m. for the first quarter.
  • Orientations and "Back-to-School" sessions are decided at the school-level and will be communicated to you by the individual school.

Schools will be communicating more specifics on virtual learning to students, and teachers will go over Canvas courses and classes the first week of school.

PWCS network account

  • All students should confirm access to their PWCS network account by logging in to PWCS Toolbox
  • After logging in, check the password expiration date.  If it will expire prior to 6/11/21, click "Update Password" inside Toolbox and create a new one. Unless your password is compromised, this new password will last you through this school year.
  • If a student cannot login to PWCS Toolbox, or if new to the PWCS, go to PWCS Password Self Service.  Here you will enter your network username, student number and birth date to update your network password.

Log in to your PWCS Canvas account

Canvas is the Learning Management System for PWCS

• Use the Microsoft 365 App launcher to login to Canvas. The App launcher is accessed by clicking on the nine dots (aka “the waffle”) at the top left-hand corner of your Microsoft 365 account.
• Select All Apps, scroll down to find and click on Canvas.
• Since you are already logged in to your PWCS account, you will not be required to re-enter your login information.

Log in to your PWCS Zoom account

• Use the Microsoft 365 app launcher (aka “the waffle”) to login to Zoom.
Access the app launcher by clicking on the waffle at the top left-hand corner of your Microsoft 365 account.
• Select All Apps, scroll down to find and click on Zoom. A new tab will open.
• Select Sign in with SSO; enter pwcs-zm-edu for the Zoom Company Name; then click Continue.
• A web browser will open, and you will sign into your email using your PWCS Office 365 credentials (PWCS email address and network password).

Log in to your StudentVUE account

• Access the StudentVUE webpage, or download the app to your phone

o Username: Office 365 email address
o Password: PWCS network password

New this year is our online Return to Learn packet taking the place of the paper Emergency Cards and other consent and acknowledgment forms and documents typically distributed during the first days of school. Emergency Cards and Annual Acknowledgements and Consents Now Electronic

The Return to Learn Packet refers to the process at the beginning of the school year, where parents can review emergency cards and contact information for their students and complete any annual policy reviews and acknowledgements, including receipt of information about the Code of Behavior, legal responsibilities as a parent under Virginia Code §22 1-279.3, attendance, and release of student directory information.

In past years, our schools have sent home a “first day packet” with the Emergency Cards and required forms to be completed. This year, we will be providing the information virtually, via the Return to Learn Packet, now available in ParentVUE. 

It is extremely important that all families complete the Return to Learn Packet prior to the end of the first week of school. The information you provide will allow school staff to have the most up-to-date contact information and ensure the safety of your student this school year.

Prior to completing this packet, please review the Attendance and Code of Behaviors tabs on this page below. You will be asked to acknowledge you have read these policies and documents in the online Return to Learn Packet .

For ease of use, a web browser on a computer is recommended. The forms can be completed using the ParentVUE App for Apple devices or on Android devices using a browser.

What is ParentVUE?

ParentVUE is a tool that offers parents and guardians access to their students' grades, attendance information, and more. Parents and guardians also have the ability to submit updates to contact information, check attendance, and submit course requests during scheduling windows via ParentVUE


How do I get a ParentVUE account?

Parents must apply for a ParentVUE account using an Activation Code that is sent via email to their email account on record with the school. When creating the account, parents will choose their own username and password and can manage this password using the More Options/Forgot Password from the ParentVUE login page.

How do I access ParentVUE?

ParentVUE is available via a web browser or via an app for your phone or tablet available in the Google Play Store and Apple Store.
Note that functionality is limited in the app version, so it is suggested to use the web version when possible.

  • If you are trying to create your account and cannot locate your activation code and need assistance with obtaining a new one, please contact your school directly.

  • If you have an account already but have forgotten your password, you can create a new one by clicking on More Options/Forgot Password from the  ParentVUE login page.


What is Canvas?

Canvas is Prince William County School's new Learning Management System (LMS). Canvas provides a platform for teachers to create virtual classrooms, supporting both real-time (synchronous) and self-paced (asynchronous) learning. Canvas is a powerful tool for blended and distance learning.

How can I obtain a Canvas account?

Parents and guardians will have Canvas accounts linked to their student, or multiple students, giving them access to course data, student grades, assignments, events and course interactions. To create parent/guardian accounts (referred to as Observer accounts), you will need a pairing code for your student. Once created, additional pairing codes for other children can be added to your account so you may access the canvas classrooms for all of your students from a single Canvas Observer account.

Information on obtaining pairing codes and creating a Canvas Observer role account can be found on the PWCS Canvas & Zoom web page.

Note: Parents will not be provided with PWCS Zoom accounts.

How do I get technical support for Canvas Support?

If parents or students are having issues with Canvas, please contact your school and/or teachers for support and troubleshooting.

Parents and guardians of students and employees of Prince William County Public Schools are automatically enrolled in the PWCS Notification service (School Messenger) for phone, text, and email messages. PWCS central office and schools use this system to communicate delayed opening and school-closing information, emergency messages, and to send attendance, meal account balance, and school-based outreach messages. Important Policies and Documents

Attendance Policy

Student attendance procedures are in place for the 2020-21 school to capture accurate attendance records in both an in-person, virtual and hybrid environment. Students are expected to participate in as many live instruction opportunities as possible. In the event a student cannot participate in live instruction, he/she may be marked present for a class period or the school day if the student has completed an activity, viewed a lesson, completed a quiz or had any other meaningful interaction with the instructor that will show mastery of the content that is covered. Students and parents should keep in close contact with the class instructor to better understand how attendance will be recorded if live lessons cannot be viewed.

You will be asked to acknowledge you have read the PWCS Attendance policy when completing the Return to Learn Packet online.

ATTENDANCE & EXCUSES(Regulation 724-1)

Virginia law requires that all children of compulsory school attendance age attend school each day that school is in session unless otherwise provided for by School Board policy or Virginia law. It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that their children attend school regularly. Parents should be aware that attendance officers are authorized to enforce attendance requirements, and to refer students and/or their parents to the courts for legal action, if necessary.

Code of Behavior

The Code of Behavior (COB) includes important information to guide students and adults toward success in our School Division. It is vital for parents and guardians to understand the policies, responsibilities, expectations, and rules summarized and to emphasize their importance to students. With your help, we can ensure a positive and safe learning environment in all our schools.

We deliver the Code of Behavior (COB) primarily online to keep costs down. Print copies remain available, but only on request.

A parent or guardian for every student must acknowledge his/her awareness of COB content as required by law under Virginia Code §22 1-279.3. You will be asked to acknowledge you have read the PWCS Code of Behavior when completing the Return to Learn Packet online.

Use these “rules of the road” to navigate opportunities and challenges in PWCS, while protecting the health, safety, and rights of PWCS students and staff, and the quality of our learning environment.

PWCS Health Protocols 2020-21

During the 2020-21 school year, it is important for parents/guardians and students to understand that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will ask that all students, staff and visitors follow all health guidelines set forth by Prince William County Public Schools.. This includes requirements for physical distancing and use of a face covering and may include other requirements responsive to changes in the public health environment and related governmental guidelines.  Failure to follow PWCS health guidelines may impact the student’s right to access in-person learning.

Health/Medical Forms

Required Health Information And Forms For Parents

You will find all necessary forms and guidance needed to update your student's medical information on our Student Health webpage. Medication cannot be administered to any student without appropriate authorization forms completed and on file. Any medication must be be provided in a new, sealed container with the completed authorization form. Students may NOT transport medication to and from school. Any medication not meeting the PWCS regulations will not be administered to your student.

Bus Information

Due to the small number of riders, complexity of routing, and to avoid confusion for families who have children attending school virtually, bus routes will not be shown in ParentVUE and StudentVUE in the first quarter.

Individual schools will communicate bus routes and transportation information to families of those students who will ride a bus during the first quarter.

School Food and Nutrition/Meals

Grocery Kits Available to All Students -
Pick up on Mondays and Thursdays

Grocery kits will now take the place of student meals to better support PWCS families. Instead of daily meals, families may pick up these grocery supplements on Mondays and Thursdays at 56 feeding sites

Service Times: Mondays and Thursdays from 12-6 p.m.

Service Style: Curbside pickup at school main entrance.

Meal Types: Kits are FREE to all children 18 years old and under, and include a variety of whole grains, protein, fruits, vegetables and milk designed as a weekly grocery supplement. 

Meals will continue to be distributed using appropriate social distancing and minimal personal contact.

All meals are free of charge to students age 18 and younger.

Meals may be picked up by walking up to the sites, or by driving up, which is preferred. Parents/guardians may pick-up meals without students present. Staff will request parents or guardians produce proof of student enrollment in the form of student ID, report card, or other official school documentation with the child’s name printed on the document and provide names of non-school age or children not enrolled in school, who are 18 years old and under.
